Piercing - NGC 7023 - The Iris Nebula

I spent the last 7 months expanding my photography beyond landscape.

Literally.

I'm learning a new craft: astrophotography.

It's a beautiful intersection between scientific rigor and artistic liberty, where the technical details behind using a precise scientific instrument to capture faint light from thousands, millions of light years away are sometimes overwhelming and the unique artistic vision is difficult to establish.

That's why it's so rewarding.

This is Piercing - NGC 7023 - The Iris Nebula, after 22 hours of integration. Yes, I spent several nights in the middle of the Joshua Tree desert, to capture enough data to produce this image.

This image tells the story of a blue hot star piercing through the dust it was born from, pushing it away, and sending its light 1600 light years away to reach us.

I encourage you to open the link in the comments and look and the abstract blue and magenta illuminated filaments, imagine the spectacle that potential planets orbiting around stars embedded in this dust would see.

It's fascinating.
